This songbook of the legendary people’s poet is but a further example of a hasty and bland mass product for an inflationary Victorian bookmarket with lots of cheesy landscapes by Birket Forster and the likes. Among the long list of illustrators and engravers is also Linton and his assistant William Luson Thomas, who later became the founder of the popular illustrated weekly The Graphic. Another engraver involved was Thomas Bolton. His contribution had been an ordinary one, though at that time he was experimenting with a new technology, the photoxylography.
