  Porter / Re-porter (Blake revisited)

  Da es keinen Diener gab, holte er den Porter fürs Abendessen immer selbst, aus einem Haus, Ecke Strand. Einmal erspähte er mit dem Krug Porter in der Hand, wie ein Würdenträger der Kunst daherkam, der hoch angesehene William Collins von der Royal Academy, den er einige Tage zuvor bei einem gesellschaftlichen Anlass kennengelernt hatte. Das Akademiemitglied war gerade im Begriff auf ihn zuzusteuern, um ihm die Hand zu schütteln – als er jedoch den Porter bemerkte, überlegte er es sich anders, und tat so als kenne er ihn nicht.

  Henri Durand-Brager, Special artist of Bonapartism / Reporterkünstler des Bonapartismus

  it was Durand-Brager, who with his entire habitus and flaunted adventurism shaped the role model of the professional pictorial reporter in all its diversity. In the Second Empire he had established himself as a chronicler of French colonial wars through his picture reportages of the Morocco campaign. His reportages in words and images distinguish themselves but pleasantly in regard to the precision of the descriptions and the objective and unpretentious style from the cocky gestures of most of his colleagues, who were more interested in dramatic effects. 

  Es war Henri Durand-Brager, der mit seinem ganzen Habitus und seinem zur Schau gestellten Abenteurertum das Rollenbild des professionellen Bildberichterstatters in seiner ganzen Vielseitigkeit geprägt hat. Während des zweiten Kaiserreichs hatte er sich durch seine Bildberichterstattung des Marokkofeldzugs als Chronist französischer Kolonialkriege etabliert. Seine Reportagen in Wort und Bild unterschieden sich allerdings in der Präzision ihrer Beschreibungen und in ihrem sachlichen und unprätentiösen Duktus wohltuend von den hochfahrenden Gesten seiner meisten Kollegen.

  Cliché-verre is an ambivalent thing, an inanity, the zero point in the graphic arts of the second half of the 19th century, to cite the opinion of Roland Barthes. Situated somewhere between drawing, printing and photography, cliché-verre seems from the outset to have eluded firm definition. Indeed, cliché-verre represents that moment in which art is uncontrolled, in which nature itself – in the form of light – seems to assume control, quite contrary to the application of any technique.

  Das cliché-verre ist ein mehrdeutiges Ding, eine Nichtigkeit, der Nullpunkt der Graphik in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, um mit Roland Barthes zu sprechen. Irgendwo zwischen Zeichnung, Druckgraphik und Fotografie angesiedelt, scheint sich das cliché-verre von Beginn an einer eindeutigen Festlegung entzogen zu haben. Tatsächlich geht es beim cliché-verre um jenen Moment der Regellosigkeit in der Kunst, in der die Natur selbst in Form von Licht, entgegen jeder Technik, das Reglement übernommen zu haben scheint.

  Unter Wölfen - Zweierlei Naturrepräsentation. Julia Schmid im Kunstmuseum Bonn

  In den vier Zeichnungen ihrer fortlaufenden Serie "Wölfe in der Stadt" zeigt Julia Schmid Tierpräparate im künstlichen Display von Dioramen und Schaukästen, wie sie in naturkundlichen Museen noch zu finden sind, bevor sie durch die digitale Aufrüstung verdrängt werden. Kraft der synthetischen Qualität der Zeichnung entsteht eine Art Re-Naturalisierung der Szenerie: als eigenwilligen Untoten wird den Präparaten der Vitrinen in den Zeichnungen jene Umwelt zurückgegeben, aus der sie - als lebende Tiere - einst entstammten - um den Preis einer Künstlichkeit zweiten Grades, die die Lüge einschließt.

  Thomas Nast & Theodor Kaufmann: Higher Forms of Hieroglyph / Höhere Arten von Hieroglyphe.

  The pictorial journalism of Thomas Nast marked the peak of graphic art as far as its  influence and popularity in the 19th century is concerned. No artist was ever more successful in regard to the intensity, scope and lastingness of his political impact than this North American draughtsman. In order to understand the phenomenon of Nast, it is not only important to consider that he was socialised in the heated climate of radical-democratic dissidence, what appears to be much more decisive is the fact that Nast’s first art teacher, Theodor Kaufmann, was the most ambitious pictorial artist in conceptual terms of the German Vormärz. In his writings, Kaufmann had called for a political-philosophical form of art, that functions as an emancipative instrument raising awareness by pushing through democratic processes.

  Mit der Bildpublizistik von Thomas Nast befand sich die grafische Kunst im 19. Jahrhundert im Zenit ihrer Einflussmöglichkeiten und ihrer Popularität. Kein Künstler war je, was die Intensität, das Ausmaß und die Nachhaltigkeit seiner politischen Wirkungskraft betraf, erfolgreicher als dieser nordamerikanische Zeichner.  Um dem Phänomen Nast beizukommen ist es nicht nur wichtig, in Betracht zu ziehen, dass er im hitzigen Klima eines radikaldemokratischen 48er Dissidententums sozialisiert wurde, noch wesentlicher scheint der Umstand, dass sein erster künstlerischer Lehrer Theodor Kaufmann der in konzeptueller Hinsicht wohl anspruchsvollste Bildkünstler des deutschen Vormärz war. In seinen Schriften hatte Kaufmann für eine politisch-philosophische Form von Kunst plädiert, die als bewusstseinsbildendes Werkzeug bei der Durchsetzung demokratischer Prozesse fungiert.

  "Zur Hölle mit der Linie!" / "Confound the Line" - Photo-Graphics of the New School of Wood Engraving

  Im Gegensatz zu ihren europäischen Kollegen gelang es den Fotoxylografen der New School den Holzstich als selbstbewusstes künstlerisches Medium zu etablieren. Lange vor Pop-Art verband sich in ihren Arbeiten das Prestige künstlerischer Produktion mit der Indifferenz fotografischer Reproduktion. Ihre signierten Handabzüge auf Japanpapier wurden von führenden Galerien der Zeit vermarktet und in Museen sowie auf Weltausstellungen gezeigt. Exponenten der New School wie der legendäre, früh verstorbene Frederick Juengling aus Leipzig, der Düsseldorfer Gustav Kruell, der Elsässer Henry Wolf und der aus London stammende Timothy Cole waren Stars, die man den befreundeten impressionistischen Malerkollegen gleichberechtigt an die Seite stellte.

  As opposed to their European colleagues, the photo xylographers of the New School succeeded in establishing wood engraving as a self-confident, artistic medium. Long before Pop Art, their works combined the prestige of artistic production with the indifference of photographic reproduction. Their signed handmade prints on Japan paper were marketed by leading galleries of the time and shown in museums and world fairs. Proponents of the New School, such as the legendary, short-lived Frederick Juengling from Leipzig, the Düsseldorfer Gustav Kruell, the Alsatian Henry Wolf, and Timothy Cole from London, were stars regarded as equals alongside their befriended, Impressionist painter colleagues.

  From Marx to Ensor / Von Marx nach Ensor: The Revolution Artist Wilhelm Kleinenbroich (1812 - 95)

  Some of his early paintings long counted as the main works of early-socialist art of the Vormärz. Furthermore, Cologne artist Wilhelm Kleinenbroich was one of the most idiosyncratic graphic artists of his time, as well as a portrait and panorama painter who was high in demand, the designer of the political carnival, and a specialist in tableaux vivant critical of contemporary issues, which he created preferably based on press graphics. In a late cycle of watercolours the artist, most likely well advanced in years, passed the revolutionary events in Cologne in review. In their exuberant fantasy and painterly intensity, the sheets already anticipate a James Ensor.

  Einige seiner frühen Gemälde zählen schon lange zu den Hauptwerken frühsozialistischer Kunst des Vormärz. Darüber hinaus war der Kölner Künstler Wilhelm Kleinenbroich auch einer der eigensinnigsten Grafiker seiner Zeit, ein viel gefragter Porträt- und Panoramenmaler und Gestalter des politischen Karnevals, sowie ein Spezialist für zeitkritische Tableaux vivants, die er bevorzugt nach Vorlagen von Pressegrafiken einrichtete. In einem späten Aquarellzyklus ließ der Künstler vermutlich in betagtem Alter die Revolutionsereignisse in Köln Revue passieren. Die Blätter weisen in ihrer überbordenden Fantastik und in ihrer malerischen Heftigkeit bereits auf einen James Ensor voraus.

  Hubert Herkomer as a pioneer of artistic advertisment

  Hubert Herkomer was a main exponent of the British social realism in the nineteenh century and the central artistic role model of young Vincent van Gogh. He started his  career as a special artist for the illustrated weekly The Graphic and finally ascended to the rank of a  successful  society painter. Besides he was a pioneer of new media, experimenting with printing and enamelling techniques, with photography and film. In her article "The Streets as Art Galleries", Andrea Korda focuses on Herkomer as a pioneer of pictorial advertising.

  The three months which Marcel Duchamp spent in Munich from the end of June to the end of September 1912 are judged by researchers as both the most enigmatic and momentous episode in the artist’s career. Duchamp himself called his stay in the Bavarian capital the place of his “total liberation”. He had arrived in Munich as a frustrated painter, and he left the city again as a budding Conceptual artist. The mystery of what triggered this paradigm shift has preoccupied researchers for quite some time. In the fog of the Munich mystery, the figure of an urbane and widely travelled engineer emerges ... 

  Die drei Monate, die Marcel Duchamp von Ende Juni bis Ende September 1912 in München verbracht hatte, werden von der Forschung als die rätselhafteste und zugleich folgenreichste Episode seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn gewertet. Duchamp selbst nannte seinen Aufenthalt in der bajuwarischen Metropole den Ort seiner „völligen Befreiung". Als frustrierte Maler war er nach München angereist, als angehender Konzeptkünstler hatte er die Stadt wieder verlassen. Das Rätsel, welche Auslöser es für diesen Paradigmenwechsel in München gab, hat die Forschung seit geraumer Zeit beschäftigt. Im Nebel des Münchner Mysteriums zeichnet sich nun die Gestalt eines weltgewandten und weitgereisten Ingenieurs ab ...

  In 1870 Linton left New York and moved to a farmhouse in the village of Hamden outside New Haven, Connecticut. Here he established his second private press, more than twenty years before William Morris started to promote the wave of auteur presses. In 1871 he started publishing an impressive body of critical writings which revealed various antidemocratic and racist aspects of North American politics in the formative years of the so called Gilded Age.

  The Black.Light project, which was initiated by war photographer Wolf Boewig and his companion, the travel writer Pedro Rosa Mendes, togehter with the graphic designers Henning Ahlers and Christopher Ermisch, is in many respects an adventurous one and, when it comes to openness and extension, without precedent: Ten comic artists, which are renowned for their fictitious work are to reconstruct single episodes from the West African civil wars on the base of materials provided by Boewig and Mendes. In order to develop their own perspectives they will be confronted in special workshops with journalistic methods and reports of eyewitnesses. 

  Das Projekt „Black.Light“, das der Kriegsfotograf Wolf Boewig und sein Partner, der Reiseschriftsteller Pedro Rosa Mendes in Kollaboration mit dem Grafikdesigner Henning Ahlers und dem Gestalter Christoph Ermisch angestoßen haben ist abenteuerlich und, was die Offenheit und Dimensionierung betrifft, ohne Beispiel: Zehn Comiczeichner, die sich im Fiction - Bereich einen Namen gemacht haben, sollen auf Grundlagen der Materialien von Boewig und Mendes einzelne Episoden aus den westafrikanischen Bürgerkriegen rekonstruieren. Um eigene Perspektiven entwickeln zu können werden sie in Workshops mit journalistischen Arbeitsweisen und den Berichten von Zeitzeugen konfrontiert.

Man merkt, dass die Psychoanalyse überall und nicht nur in Europa in der Luft liegt.

  Saul Leiter and Robert Weaver, an artistic dialogue

  Each of Robert Weaver´s late picture cycles represented a new and surprising approach to investigating sequentiality in the image, ambulant modes of perception and multi-perspectival narrative strategies. Artist Saul Leiter, a close friend of Weaver, had begun experimenting in the field of colour photography in the late 1940s. Weaver was one of the few witnesses who had followed the development of Leiter’s striking street photographs since the early 1950s.

  Jeder der späten Bilderzyklen von Robert Weaver repräsentiert einen neuen und überraschenden Lösungsansatz bezüglich einer Erforschung von Sequentialität im Bild, von ambulanten Wahrnehmungsweisen und multiperspektivischen Erzählstrategien. Der Künstler Saul Leiter, ein enger Freund Weavers, hatte Ende der vierziger Jahre begonnen auf dem Feld der Farbfotografie zu experimentieren. Weaver war einer der wenigen Zeugen, die die Entwicklung von Leiters markanten Strassenfotografien seit den frühen fünfziger Jahren mitverfolgt haben.

  Der dreiteilige Beitrag  enthält ein Interview mit Saul Leiter und eine Analyse von Weavers Schlüsselwerk "A Pedestrian View / The Vogelman Diary" von 1982."

  Reportagezeichnung in digitalen Darstellungsformen / Reportagedrawing in digital representation

  Um die Möglichkeiten illustrierter Bildreportagen im digitalen Raum zu erkunden  entwickelte der Berliner Illustrator Bo Soremsky eine interaktive Gerichtsreportage über das Verfahren gegen den prominenten Wettermoderator Jörg Kachelmann. Die große Menge an Prozessbeteiligten und Zeugenaussagen machte eine erhebliche Komprimierungsleistung erforderlich. In ihrer Gesamtheit bietet diese grafische Dokumentation eine Übersicht über die Positionen der einzelnen Prozessbeteiligten und ermöglicht es dem Betrachter, deren Aussagen miteinander zu vergleichen.

The selected works come from an unknown Russian soldier, from the French team Emmanuel Guibert and Didier Lefèvre, from the Canadian and North American war artists Richard Johnson and  Michael D. Fay and the Canadian comic author David Collier.

  Mysterien des Hauptbahnhofs

  Zu Beginn des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts wurde der Hauptbahnhof als Emanation des technischen Fortschritts und Brennpunkt großstädtischer Betriebsamkeit wahrgenommen, als Zentrum eines halluzinogenen "Reichs der Kraft." Die Kunst des früh verstorbenen Hermann Pleuer, die sich diesem Thema widmete, stand im Ansehen der Nachwelt allerdings immer etwas hinter dem Werk seines Berliner Konkurrenten, des wenige Jahre jüngeren Hans Baluschek zurück. Während Baluschek das Bahnermilieu als einen dramatisierten sozialen Raum erkundete ging es dem Impressionisten Pleuer eher um Technikwiedergabe und Konstruktion.

  Algerian Guerrilla War II: The iron Gates of Subjugation / Die eisernen Pforten der Unterwerfung

  That the work Journal de L'expédition des Portes De Fer, notwithstanding it´s graphic excellence, hardly receives art-historical attention anymore certainly has the least to do with its poor availability. For the passage through the dark narrow pass of Les Portes de Fer in the Algerian Djurdjura Mountains, which the French expedition had to surmount in 1839 on their way from Constantine to Algiers, marked the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in European colonial politics. The Portes des Fer had a symbolic power that went far beyond that which the propagandists of the June monarchy had intended. They were the entrance into an iron narrow of global dimensions.

  Dass das Werk Journal de L'expédition des Portes De Fer trotz seiner künstlerischen Exzellenz kaum eine kulturhistorische Beachtung mehr erfährt liegt sicherlich zum wenigsten an seiner schlechten Verfügbarkeit. Die Passage durch den finsteren Engpaß Les Portes de Fer im algerischen Djurdjura Gebirge, die die französische Expedition 1839 auf ihrem Weg von Constantine nach Algier zu bewältigen hatte, eröffnete eines der schwärzesten Kapitel europäischer Kolonialpolitik. Die Portes des Fer hatten eine Symbolkraft, die weit über das hinausging, was die Propagandisten der Julimonarchie intendiert hatten.   William James Linton - A Life in the Collections / Eine Biografie in Sammlungsbeständen

  The early working class movement had its poets and writers, and it was indeed backed by some professional caricaturists; it even had its sympathizers within academic artistic circles. But as a Chartist artist immediately involved in The Cause, Linton held a solitary position. To follow the various strands of his production means to witness the gradual experimental formation of an „interventionist“ type of art – to use a contemporary expression. In many respects he can be called the first political artist sui generis. One might have to search long to find any other 19th century artist whose work is of comparable topicality and relevance today.

  Die frühe Arbeiterbewegung hatte ihre Dichter und Schreiber und sie konnte sich zum Teil auch auf Sympathisanten in den Kreisen akademischer Künstler und Pressegrafiker berufen. Als Künstler des Chartismus, der unmittelbar in die „Sache“ involviert war, nahm Linton allerdings eine völlig solitäre Stellung ein. Den verschiedenen Strängen seiner Produktion zu folgen bedeutet der schrittweisen, experimentellen Formation einer „interventionistischen“ Art von Kunst beizuwohnen – um einen zeitgenössischen Begriff zu verwenden. In vielerlei Hinsicht kann Linton als erster politischer Künstler sui generis begriffen werden. Man wird lange suchen müssen um ein künstlerisches Werk des 19ten Jahrhunderts ausfindig zu machen, das heute von vergleichbarer Relevanz und Aktualität ist.

  In a second-hand bookstore in Baku, Azerbaijan a group of international artists named Slavs and Tatars came across some volumes of the once wide spread historial  Azeri magazine Molla Nasreddin. The  Caucasian periodical, which was was read across the Muslim world from Morocco to Iran, was founded in 1906 in Tiflis by the Azerbaijani satirist and writer Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and ran until 1931.

  What was it that turned Ali Ferzat from a celebrated national artist and personal friend of Bashar al-Asad into a target for the Schabiha, the notorious militia, used by the Syrian regime to intimidate opponents and settle accounts? At the end of the nineties, a friendship developed between the cartoonist and Bashar, the son of Syrian president Hafez al Asad. When Bashar took power in 2000, expectations were high. In the beginning he seemed to be inclined to carry through reforms and allow more political freedom.

  Algerian Guerrilla War I / Algerischer Guerillakrieg I: Auguste Raffet & Horace Vernet

  The journalistic impulse, which Auguste Raffet introduced into the serial event illustrations of the time distinguishes him as the actual founding figure of the genre of the documentary graphic novel, as the precursor of a Jacques Tardi, Emmanuel Guibert or Joe Sacco. The scenes of urban guerrilla warfare which he described later turned out to be characteristic of the terror strategies of the liberation wars of the 20th and 21st century. Both in artistic and content-related respect, his pictorial cycle La Prise de Constantine appears as a prelude to Gillo Pontecorvo’s docudrama on the events of the Algerian War of Independence, La Battiglia di Algeri. Both are path-breaking reconstruction endeavours in the field of documentary realism.

  Der journalistische Impuls, den Auguste Raffet in die serielle Ereignisgrafik der Zeit einbrachte weist ihn als eigentliche Gründungsgestalt des Genres der dokumentarischen Graphic Novel aus, als Vorläufer eines Jacques Tardi, Emmanuel Guibert oder Joe Sacco. Die Szenen urbanen Guerrillakampfs, die er in seinen Lithographien zum Algerienkrieg schilderte sollten sich als charakteristisch für die Terrorstrategien der Befreiungskriege des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts herausstellen. Sowohl in künstlerischer als auch in inhaltlicher Hinsicht verhält sich seine Bilderfolge La Prise de Constantine wie ein Präludium zu Gillo Pontecorvo´s Dokudrama  La Battiglia di Algeri. In beiden Fällen handelt es sich um bahnbrechende Rekonstruktionsarbeiten im Bereich des dokumentarischen Realismus.

  Never stop working - Die unübersehbare Ankunft des Mr. James Castle

  James Castle, von dem wir nicht wissen, ob er sprechen, lesen konnte oder gar den Sinn von Buchstaben tatsächlich verstanden hat, schuf sein eigenes "Museum." Er verwahrte seine künstlerische Produktion in Wandnischen alter Mauern und legte seine Konvolute auf den hohen und höchsten Regalen seiner persönlichen Umgebung ab wie schamanistische Schätze. Was wir im Werk von Castle vor uns haben und was es über seine physisch-ästhetische Seite hinaus bedeutsam macht, ist nichts anderes als ein vollkommen geschlossener Kreislauf von Lebenswelt und künstlerischer Produktion.

   Dierk Schmidt’s pictorial series Teilung der Erde (The Division of the Earth) is defined by a visual paradigm that combines a modernist surface quality and cartographic forms of representation. The works show what they are: the floor plan of Palais Radziwill in Berlin, where the so-called “Africa Conference” took place in 1884 and 1885, a map of the Congo and the floor plan of a Namibian ceremonial site or assembly grounds. How can history be told when administrative acts have taken the place of subjects? Moreover, is it possible to combine representations of history and functional abstraction?

  Die Bildserie „Teilung der Erde“ von Dierk Schmidt ist von einem visuellen Paradigma bestimmt, das modernistische Flächigkeit und kartographische Darstellungsformen vereint.   It was the extraordinary intensity of his landscape depictions and the graphic freedom that he allowed himself to this end that had laid the foundations for Linton’s reputation as a leading proponent of artistic xylography in the 19th century. From the first independent works towards the end of the 1830s on, the landscape image accompanied him as a projection screen for his radical-democratic utopias and the experiences he had made in realpolitik.The apex of his decade-long landscape work was marked in the mid 1860s by the publication of his two comprehensive Lake Country cycles. With its great graphic diversity and the surprising freshness of impressions of nature, the large complex of Linton’s Lake engravings mark a peak in western 19th-century landscape art, which has remained unsurpassed in the area of graphic reproductions.

  Es waren die außergewöhnliche Intensität seiner Landschaftsdarstellungen und die grafischen Freiheiten, die er sich dabei nahm, die Linton´s Reputation als führender Vertreter der künstlerischen Xylographie im 19. Jahrhundert begründet hatten. Von den ersten selbstständigen Arbeiten zu Ende der 1830er Jahren an begleitete ihn das Landschaftsbild als Projektionsfläche seiner radikaldemokratischen Utopien und realpolitischen Erfahrungen. Der Kulminationspunkt dieser jahrzehntelangen Auseinandersetzung war Mitte der sechziger Jahre erreicht, als seine beiden umfangreichen Lake Country - Zyklen erschienen waren. Dieses große Konvolut von Lake-Stichen markiert in seiner ganzen grafischen Vielfalt und überraschenden Frische des Natureindrucks einen Höhepunkt westlicher Landschaftskunst des 19. Jahrhunderts, der auf dem Gebiet der Druckgrafik seither unerreicht geblieben ist.

  Dass die Grafiken von Käthe Kollwitz nur pazifistisch wirksam waren, gehört zu den nicht wenigen Mythen, die in der Ausstellung Kriegszeit an den Betrachter weiterreicht werden. Blätter wie Der Weberzug, Aufruhr oder Losbruch transportierten genug dynamisches Aggressionspotential, um sie später erfolgreich für Hetzkampagnen im kommunistischen Klassenkampf einsetzen zu können. Kollwitz-Grafiken dienten beispielsweise in den Holzschnittschulungen des Dichters Lu Xun, die in Shanghai zu Mitte der 30er Jahre stattfanden, als zentrales Anschauungsmaterial.

  "I took with me a painter" - Archaeologists, artists, draughtsmen and photographers in excavation./ "Ich habe einen Maler mitgenommen"

  In search for earlier parallels to his own drawings, the artist and Middle East expert Theo de Feyter found out that documenting excavation activities in works of art is rather rare. There are early examples from the middle of the 19th century, which are introduced in the article, when archaeologists made use of artists as draughtsmen. They were travelling artists and technical draughtsmen in one. This type of artist/draughtsman has disappeared as member of the excavation team; but this does not mean that drawing is´nt  important in archaeology anymore.
  
  After a conversation on archaeology and drawing, which took place in the MePri in 2006, this rather historical contribution is a second inquiry in the relationship between art, visual documentation and archaeology.

  Auf der Suche nach historischen Parallelen zu seinen eigenen Grabungszeichnungen hat sich für den Künstler und Nahostspezialisten Theo de Feyter herausgestellt, daß es eher selten vorkam, daß Künstler Grabungsaktivitäten festgehalten haben. Es gibt einige frühe Beispiele aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, die in dem Beitrag vorgestellt werden,  als Archäologen Künstler als Zeichner herangezogen haben. Sie waren Reisekünstler und technische Zeichner in einem. Diese Art von Künstler/Zeichner gibt es nicht mehr als Mitglieder der Grabungsmannschaft, was  allerdings nicht heißt, daß Zeichnung in der Archäologie keine wichtige Rolle mehr spielt.
  
  Nach einem Gespräch über Zeichnung und Archäologie, das 2006 im MePri stattgefunden hat, handelt es sich bei diesem eher historischen Beitrag um eine weitere Nachforschung über den Zusammenhang von Kunst, bildnerischer Dokumentation und Archäologie.

  The allusion to the “rightly” disembowelled body of the Prince Louis Napoleon, especially because it was connected to the cult of monuments, had to inevitably trigger associations to a ceremonial, public dissection at the outcome of which stood the origin of a memorial sculpture. Although this ceremony had taken place almost thirty years beforehand, the memory of it must have been extremely present among Linton’s circle of acquaintances, especially at the time the piece was written, for it had been no less than an informal foundation act of the secular movement that made an appearance at the time with audience-grabbing actions and became the topic of fierce controversies.

  Die Anspielung auf den „rechtens“ ausgeweideten Corpus des Prinzen Louis Napoleon musste, zumal sie in Verbindung mit dem Denkmalkult stand, unweigerlich Assoziationen wachrufen an eine feierliche öffentliche Sezierung an deren Ausgang die Entstehung einer Memorialskulptur stand. Obgleich diese Zeremonie fast dreißig Jahre zuvor stattgefunden hatte, war die Erinnerung daran in Linton´s Bekanntenkreis gerade zum Zeitpunkt der Abfassung des Stückes sehr präsent gewesen, denn es handelte sich dabei um nichts Geringeres als eine informelle Gründungsakte der säkularen Bewegung, die eben zu dieser Zeit Gegenstand heftigster Kontroversen war.

  War Goethe war artist, oder viel eher ein politischer Brandstifter? Der dritte und letzte Abschnitt des historischen Essays untersucht seine vom Ideal einer heroischen Landschaft geprägten Zeichnungen und stellt Bezüge her zwischen der Leitmotivik seiner Bildproduktion und seiner späten Dichtungen, zwischen seinen Ansichten und seinen realpolitischen Aktivitäten, die ihn als einen wichtigen Repräsentanten der Metternich´schen Repressionspolitik auswiesen. Das Bild vom Geheimrat von Goethe als einem moderaten Diener eines friedlichen Musenstaates scheint dringend einer Korrektur zu bedürfen. Und mit dieser Korrektur zeichnet sich im Zusammenhang mit seinem sozialutopischen Spätwerk auch ein viel plastischeres Bild ab von dem, was die geistige Schirmherrschaft des Dichters über der Gründung des neuen Wilhelminischen Reichs tatsächlich bedeutet hat und was sie vor allem in der Kontinuität deutscher Geschichte mit dem darauf folgenden 'Dritten Reich' verbindet.

  Was Goethe a war artist, or rather a political incendiary propagandist? The third and last part of the historical essay examines his drawings which were informed by the ideal of the heroic landscape and establish a relationship between the leitmotifs of his pictures and his late poetry, between his views and his real political activities, marking him as a convinced representative of Metternich’s repressive policies. The image of the privy councillor Goethe as a moderate servant of a peaceful Muse state must urgently be corrected, as it appears. And along with this correction and in view of his social-utopian late work, a much clearer picture emerges of what the poet’s intellectual patronage of the foundation of the new Wilhelminian Empire actually means and, in particular, what connects it, in the continuity of German history, with the subsequent Third Reich.

Als einflussreicher antirepublikanischer Propagandist und ehemaliger Militär- und Rüstungsexperte des Herzogtums Sachsen-Weimar hatte der Dichter 1792 am Feldzug der monarchistischen Allianz gegen das revolutionäre Frankreich teilgenommen.  Der zweite Abschnitt des historischen Essays handelt davon wie Goethe und zwei Gefolgskünstler wenige Monate nach dem unrühmlichen Ende dieser Unternehmung Augenzeuge der Niederschlagung der Mainzer Republik wurde, des ersten demokratischen Staatswesens auf deutschem Boden, das mit Unterstützung der französischen Revolutionsarmee etabliert worden war.

As an influential  anti-republican propagandist and former expert on military affairs of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, the poet had participated in the monarchist campaign against revolutionary France.   William James Linton´s teaching piece "Cetewayo and Dean Stanley" (1880)

  Although it ranks among the very rare examples of anti-colonial literature written in the early phase of high imperialism, Linton´s political teaching piece has hitherto not been registered by academic research. The subject of the fictitious dialogue is a bizarre incident that occurred during the war between the Zulu Nation and the British Empire. Linton’s main interest lies less in the causes and effects of colonial aggression than in the construction of history.

  Obgleich es zu den ganz seltenen Beispielen kolonialkritischer Literatur zählt, die in der frühen Phase des Hochimperialismus entstanden sind, ist Lintons politisches Lehrstück bislang von der Forschung nicht registriert worden. Gegenstand des fiktiven Dialogs ist der imperiale Denkmalkult und ein bizarrer Zwischenfall, der sich während des Zulu-Kriegs ereignete.   Cham, the "popular" Caricaturist

  Daumier Again. The following survey by David Kunzle contrasts Daumier's career with that of the then much more popular Amédée de Noé, who was known under his penname Cham. He was ten years younger and a disciple of Daumier's role model, the tragically underrated Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, who was banned by Baudelaire from the pantheon of Caricature.  Whereas the previous article „Against Daumier“ mainly argued from a viewpoint of graphic social reporting, Kunzle´s contribution with his emphasis on pictorial narration sheds a more specific light on the question why Daumier was blamed by his publisher Philipon for his lack of imagination.

  Ein Münchner im Milljöh. "Berliner Bilder" von Karl Arnold

  Karl Arnold, der zur  zweiten Generation der Simplicissimus-Zeichner zählte, hatte sich geschickt in den von Thomas Theodor Heine, von Olaf Gulbransson und Bruno Paul geprägten Stil des Hauses eingefunden. In der Hauptstadt traf er dann auf ein pressegrafisches Terrain, das fremd und anziehend war, bestellt von lokalen Größen wie Heinrich Zille, Paul Simmel, Fritz Koch-Gotha und neuerdings auch dem jungen George Grosz. Herausgekommen ist denn auch eine Art weichgespülter Grosz, mit einer Tendenz zur jugendstiligen Eleganz, die dementsprechend auch ohne die inhaltlichen  Grobheiten des KPD-Dadaisten auskommen wollte.

  Much more than her precursor Joseph Pennell, Viennese artist Lili Rethi was able to transform static architectural sites into energetic, vibrant organisms. In the late Forties and Fifties, when hardly anyone thought about the ecological consequences, she would glorify the extraction of global resources as marvels of a never- ending human progress. Canadian artist Susan Turcot, who ideologically takes an opposing viewpoint still found inspiration in Rethi's work.

  Man möchte dem Zeit Lebens als  sehr bescheiden und zurückhaltend geltenden Honoré Daumier, der zweifelsfrei einer der hervorragenden Pressegrafiker der Zeit war, die bizarre Apotheose, die ihm in den letzten Lebensjahren zuteil geworden ist, vergönnen, – wäre sie nicht mit einer völligen Verzerrung der genealogischen Entwicklungslinien der Karikaturgeschichte verbunden und würde diese groteske Monumentalisierung, die sein Werk erfahren hat, nicht das Verständnis für die Zusammenhänge zwischen den experimentellen Errungenschaften der Pressegrafik und den Spielarten der frühen künstlerischen Avantgarden blockieren.

  Melchior Lorck: Precursor of the "specials"

  Melchior Lorck, born in 1526/27 in the former Danish Flensburg, was a contemporary of Pieter Breugel the Elder. He worked in locations as diverse as Constantinople and Antwerp, Hamburg and Vienna, and Rome and Copenhagen. Though still known only to a small circle of scholars, Lorck can be called a godfather of the "specials", - of those artists, who´s business was to lead an initerant life by making  graphic reports on spot in different regions of the world.

  A Poster by Émile Cohl and a letter by his grandson.

  The MePri-Colletions holds the original of a coloured poster, signed by Emile Cohl. Pierre Courtet-Cohl, the grandson of Emile Cohl was so kind  to examine this large cartoon (84 x 49 cm) and it turned out that the drawing was not only authentic, but also – as far as known -  the only surviving example of a huge series of 300 caricatures referring to weekly topics.

  The Empty Image as Weapon. Charles Gilbert-Martin´s Anti-Censorship Campaign / Das leere Bild als Waffe. Die Anti- Zensur Kampagne des Charles Gilbert-Martin

  When he founded the caricature periodical Le Don Quichotte in Bordeaux in 1874, Gilbert-Martin had already made a number of bitter experiences with the Parisian censors of the Second Empire. Gilbert-Martin responded to the banning of the July issue No. 159 by declaring that he would no longer publish any caricatures until the censor Jacques de Tracy stepped down from office. Instead of the usual grotesque heads of celebrities, the readers longing for caricatures were now offered a diet of pure colour, dry typography and plain ornament. But the deprivation was more than compensated by their witnessing the exciting fight between Don Quichotte and its censor.

  Als er 1874 in Bordeaux die Karikaturzeitung Le Don Quichotte gründete, hatte Gilbert-Martin bereits etliche bittere Erfahrungen mit den Pariser Zensoren des zweiten Kaiserreichs hinter sich. Das Verbot der Juli-Ausgabe No. 159 beantwortete Gilbert-Martin mit der Ankündigung, er werde so lange keine Karikaturbilder mehr abdrucken, bis  der Zensor Jacques de Tracy aus dem Amt sei. Statt der gewohnten grotesken Prominentenköpfe bekam der karikaturhungrige Leser nun eine Diät aus reiner Farbe, trockner Typographie und  schlichtem Ornament verabreicht. Der Entzug wurde allerdings mehr als reichlich kompensiert durch die aufregende Zeugenschaft an dem Ringen  zwischen Don Quichotte und seinem Zensor.

  Willibald Krain and the Ashcan School. The Agony of Socio-Critical Press Graphics in the 20th Century / Willibald Krain und die Ashcan School. Die Agonie der sozialkritischen Pressegrafik im 20. Jahrhundert

  Willibald Krain ranked among the very few socio-critical artists in 1920s Germany whose work was internationally acclaimed. His illustrations and paintings were published in journals of the English and American labour movements, in the Londoner “New Leader” and the New Yorker “Survey Magazine”. In 1924 he attended the trial against Hitler as a court sketch artist for the “Berliner Illustrirte”. The fact that Krain’s work attracted interest, particularly in the United States, is no coincidence, for his artistic goals and his style almost entirely matched those of the proponents of the Ashcan Group, the most influential formation of American artists at the time.

  Willibald Krain zählte in den zwanziger Jahren zu den ganz wenigen sozialkritischen Künstlern in Deutschland, deren Arbeit eine internationale Beachtung gefunden hatte. Er publizierte in englischsprachigen sozialistischen Magazinen wie dem einflussreichen Londoner New Leader und dem New Yorker Survey Magazine. 1924 war er als Gerichtszeichner für die BIZ beim Hitler-Prozess zugegen. Dass Krain gerade in  Amerika besondere Beachtung fand, kommt nicht von ungefähr, denn seine künstlerische Zielsetzung und seine Handschrift waren nahezu deckungsgleich mit denen der Vertreter der Ashcan Group, der einflussreichsten amerikanischen Künstlerformation der Zeit.

  The MePri-Collection holds four different copies of Linton’s groundbreaking social poem in which he accuses the afflictions caused by the inhuman legislation for the poor.  It narrates the bloody history of the rise of private property and feudalism and then concentrates on the story of a starving weaver and his final degradation and death in a workhouse. In his unique concept of illustration, Linton seems to respond to William Blake’s idea of the “Illuminated Books” by establishing a kind of multi-layered, storyboard-like pictorial comment.

  Die Erfindung archigenetischer Gründungsmythen scheint eine der eigentümlichsten und nachhaltigsten Leistungen der Moderne gewesen zu sein. Schaut man sich  die Entwicklungsstränge  der Kunst des  frühen 20. Jhds. aus der Perspektive des Sonnendecks gängiger Kunstgeschichtsschreibung an, dann erweist sich das Auftauchen anarchischer Gruppierungen wie der Dadaisten und Surrealisten als ein schockierender Einbruch aus heiterem Himmel  in die gemütliche Tradition bourgeoiser Ausstellungspraxis. Aus der Kellerperspektive des Maschinenraums einer Illustrationsgeschichte, die  eine noch weitgehend Ungeschriebene ist, vermittelt sich jedoch ein ganz anderes Bild.

Romane und Erzählungen von Charles Dickens, Wilhelm Hauff und Fjodor Dostojewskij.Als Pressezeichner  arbeitete für einige der meist verbreiteten Zeitschriften der Zeit, u.a. die Leipziger Illustrirte Zeitung, Die Gartenlaube und Die Woche. Eines der bevorzugten Themen seiner Bildreporten waren touristische Aktivitäten.

Absolutely Drawpassing is derived from the words drawing and no trespassing. Trespassing (by foot, bike, car, bus, ship, train and plane) with open eyes, ears and mind, with a pencil, camera and voice recorder.  Here his drawpassing practice is presented along with his sketches of highways, trailer parks  and of the living conditions of homeless persons.

  Art or Craft. William James Linton vs. William Morris. A posthumous dispute.

  The MePri Collection holds a wondrous scrapbook on wood engraving, affectionately  combined and carefully lettered by William Abercrombie. It mainly consists of a chronological documentation of a discussion on the role of the artisan in times of photographic reproduction that took place in some of the leading American art journals and that was aroused by the polemics of  William James Linton. Abercrombie, an admirer and collector of William Morris, could easily recognize Linton’s specifications as a substantial attack on the fundaments of the “purist” ideology of the Kelmscott Press and he persuaded W.H. Hooper, the leading engraver of the Kelmscott Press, to counter Linton´s attacks.

  By confronting the person, who had executed the  engravings of the Morris  Press, and asking him to contribute to his private documentation, he put his fingers exactly on the wounds of the ideology of  the Arts & Crafts Movement.

  Social Credit & Direct Democracy - William James Linton: "The English Republic". London / Brantwood, 1850-55

  In the following months, we will post some articles on significant new acquisitions of the William James Linton - Archive. We start with his “English Republic”, - due to current reasons.

  In December 1850, almost two years after the revolutionary hopes of a democratic change had been buried Europe-wide under a mantle of resignation and depression, Linton began to proclaim his forceful vision of an English Republic.  In the following five years, he would amplify and equip his vision of a direct democracy in a flood of articles that poured out of his pen into his newly founded organ of propagandism.

  Theodor Rocholl - The Broken Historical Painter / Der gebrochene Historienmaler

  That one tends to stay clear of an oeuvre filled with ultra-nationalistic and proto-“Brown” motifs is understandable, since one doesn’t want to burn one’s fingers. Yet in face of the striking artistic qualities of Theodor Rocholl’s drawings and paintings, which in an international comparison reveal him to be a quite outstanding and idiosyncratic proponent of post-Impressionism, the extent of the ignorance with which his work is encountered, or rather not encountered, is all highly astounding.

  Dass man um ein solches Oeuvre, das von ultra-nationalistischen und proto-„braunen“ Motiven durchdrungen ist,  gern einen weiten Bogen macht, ist verständlich. Man will sich schließlich nicht die Finger verbrennen. Angesichts der frappierenden künstlerischen Qualitäten von Theodor Rocholls Zeichnungen und Malereien, die ihn auch im internationalen Vergleich als einen ganz hervorragenden und eigenwilligen Vertreter des Post-Impressionismus ausweisen,  ist  das Ausmaß dieser Ignoranz, mit dem man seinem Werk begegnet oder vielmehr nicht begegnet, allerdings nur erstaunlich zu nennen.

Indem Birk die allseits bekannte Bildberichterstattung des Irakkriegs aus ihrer Pixel-Entität in die Schraffuren einer klassischen Drucktechnik  überführt, gelingt es ihm, die flüchtigen  visuellen Bruchstücke tagesaktueller Kriegsberichterstattung in einen überzeitlichen bilderbogenartigen Erzählzusammenhang zu  entrücken.

  Die Bilder  aus der Reihe  ‘Houses of Damascus’ zeigen Häuser in Alt-Damaskus aus dem achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhundert.  École Bésançon ist ein grosses Familienhaus aus dem neunzehnten Jahrhundert. In 1930 schenkte der Besitzer es der griechisch-katholischen Kirche. Danach wurde es als Schule genutzt, in der  die Schwestern von Bésançon bis 2005 unterrichteten. Nahezu alle Kinder aus der Altstadt, egal ob Christen oder Muslime sind auf diese Schule gegangen.

  David Friedmann war ein Schüler von Lovis Corinth, der im Berlin der zwanziger Jahre mit spätimpressionistischen Malereien reüssiert hatte. Als hervorragendem Porträtisten war es Friedmann ab 1924 gelungen, sich neben bekannten "Kopfjägern" wie Fred Dolbin und Emil Stumpp  als einer der profiliertesten Pressezeichner der Zeit zu etablieren.

  The painter and graphic artist David Friedmann lived in Berlin from 1911 and was a student of Lovis Corinth. He worked for various newspapers and magazines and was famous for his concise portraits. Almost his complete works were confiscated and probably destroyed by the Gestapo.

  Thomas Zacharias: Auch in der Wissenschaft gibt es ja die Frage – denken wir an die Heisenbergsche Unschärferelation – wie weit der Betrachter durch die Beobachtung den Gegenstand verändert. Und wie weit die Wahrnehmung von der gesamten Situation, von Wind und Wetter und von der Befindlichkeit und vom Interesse dessen, der da dieses Stück Realität abbilden will, abhängig ist. Und dieser Aspekt, die subjektive Seite, der besonders konzentrierte Erregungszustand ist bei den U-Bahn Zeichnungen extrem.

  Thomas Zacharias: In science there is also the question – just think of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle – related to the extent to which the observer alters the object of observation by observing it. And to what degree perception depends on the entire situation, the wind and weather, the sensitivities and the interest of the person wanting to represent this piece of reality. And this aspect, the subjective side, the highly concentrated state of excitement is extreme in the tube drawings.

  Paul Renouard was the most productive and most published journalistic illustrator, along with his English colleague of the same age, Melton Prior. Both were exponents of a second generation of ‘special artists’, who began to work in the heyday of graphic reportage, when the expanding illustrated journal business sought to quench the audience’s steadily growing thirst for pictures by means of ever more sophisticated and effective reproduction methods. They were active up until the first decades of the 20th century, at a time when drawn documentations appeared merely as scattered islands in a sea of blurred photographic pictures.

  Paul Renouard ist neben seinem gleichaltrigen englischen Kollegen Melton Prior der produktivste und meist publizierte Reportagezeichner gewesen. Beide waren Vertreter einer zweiten Generation von ‚special artist’, deren Arbeit in der Hochphase graphischer Berichterstattung einsetzte, als das expandierende Illustriertenwesen mit immer ausgefeilteren und effektiveren Reproduktionsverfahren den stetig wachsenden Bilderhunger des Publikums zu sättigen suchte. Ihre Tätigkeiten erstreckten sich bis in die ersten Dekaden des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, als gezeichnete Dokumentation nur noch vereinzelt Inseln bildete in einem Meer von verschwommenen fotografischen Abbildungen.

  The concept evolved around French and Dutch speakers, seen as neighbours, co-living in the Belgium of the Government crisis in 2007. This period was called the “Orange bleue” (the blue orange) due to the colours of a liberal-catholic coalition foreshadowed from the summer to the winter, but which, at the end, has never seen the light. During these post-election six months, Belgium had no new Government and the traditional conflicts between French and Dutch Communities were exacerbated. “Will the federal, unitary Belgium still exist in the future?” was the big question of this period.(...)

  Thomas Nast: «Dead Men´s Clothes Soon Wear Out»

  Bei der Zeichnung von Thomas Nast, Teil eines größeren Konvoluts von insgesamt vierzehn Skizzen des Künstlers im Bestand des MePri, handelt es sich um eine sehr präzise Vorstudie zu einem seiner bekanntesten politischen Cartoons. Der Holzstich, der nach dieser 18 x 22,5 cm großen Skizze angefertigt worden ist, füllte am 10.September 1870 eine großformatige Doppelseite in “Harpers Weekly“, der meist verbreiteten amerikanischen Illustrierten der Zeit. Nast arbeitete seit Beginn des Sezessionskriegs für dieses Blatt und zwar mit sensationellem Erfolg: Kein Zeichner war mit seinen grafischen Kampagnen politisch je einflussreicher als dieser aus Landau in der Pfalz stammende Cartoonist...

  11. Januar 1871. Schnee bedeckt die Bunkeranlagen der Bastion 69, südwestlich von Paris. Mit geschulterten Gewehren, das Bajonett aufgepflanzt, schieben einige Soldaten Wache. Eisiger Wind bläst über die Verteidigungswälle. Man wartet, die Zeit scheint still zu stehen, wie eingefroren. Einer befindet sich unter den Wachtposten, der selbst kein Soldat, aber dennoch längst Teil der Mannschaft ist. Der Maler und Zeichner Isidore Pils ist regelmäßiger Gast, er ist da, um die Situation der Belagerung von Paris durch die preußischen Truppen in einer Reihe von Aquarellen festzuhalten.

  11 January, 1871. Snow covers the bunker installations of Bastion 69, southwest of Paris. Several soldiers are on guard with shouldered rifles and fixed bayonets. An icy wind is blowing over the defence walls. One waits, time seems to stand still, as if it were frozen. One person among the guards is not a soldier, but long a member of the crew all the same. He is the painter and draughtsman Isidore Pils, a regular guest there to capture the situation of the siege of Paris by the Prussian troops in a series of watercolours.

  Ich habe während meines Aufenthalts in Acre versucht, historische, umweltbezogene und anthropologische Forschung mit meiner eigenen Erfahrung der Rituale, des Austauschs und der Reise zusammenzubringen.
  Die Serie fängt nicht gegenwärtige Situationen ein; die Zeichnungen sind vielmehr aus Erfahrungen, die ich in Acre gesammelt habe, herausdestilliert. Sie entstanden durch den Prozess des Zeichnens, der zu einer Serie symbolischer Bilder geführt hat.

  Robert Weaver II - Split-Level Books

  In the 1980s, frustrated by the increasing restrictions in the field of magazine design, Weaver shifted the focus of his activities more and more to teaching at the New York Visual School of Arts and expanded a loose sequence of diary-like motif books he began with in the 1970s to form an independent complex of artistic works that, in the words of the composer and comic artist Peter Blegvad, was "at least twenty years ahead of its time."

  Frustriert über die zunehmenden Restriktionen im Bereich der Zeitschriftengestaltung verlagerte Weaver in den achtziger Jahren den Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeiten in zunehmendem Masse auf seine Lehrtätigkeit an der New Yorker Visual School of Arts und baute eine in den siebziger Jahren begonnene losen Folge von tagebuchartig geführten Motivbüchern zu einem eigenständigen künstlerischen Werkkomplex aus, mit dem er in den Worten des Komponisten und Comiczeichners Peter Blegvad "seiner Zeit um mindestens zwanzig Jahre voraus" war...

Robert Weaver is from Pittsburgh and in 1949, the same year the other Pittsburgher Andy Warhol, the subject of Reed’s cycle of songs, moved to the metropolis of New York, Weaver. (....)

Robert Weaver stammt aus Pittsburgh und 1949, im gleichen Jahr als der eine Pittsburgher Andy Warhol, um den sich Reeds Songzyklus dreht, in die Metropole New York gezogen war befand sich der vier Jahre ältere Weaver auf dem Weg nach Italien (...)
